We are pleased to announce that St Iltyd's High School in Cardiff is the latest school to join the Feeding Jar Project.We are very grateful to the school for getting involved and hope that many pupils will collect their loose change to help feed the children in the Ethembeni School in Chiziro,Zambia.

What a great time we had again this year.The Radyr High School chamber choir was wonderful and Kate Morgan on piano made the evening go with a swing. We raised plenty of money due to very generous donations from over 100 guests.Everyone went away in festive mood and we were thrilled to be able to send the money to Zambia to help with the costs of building the new school in Chiziro.
The next fundraising event is on Saturday 14th January at Lisvane Memorial Hall. It is a four course Gourmet Supper with light entertainment by members of the WNO. Details are on our website.

Quiz night 2011

We had a great time at the quiz last night with 15 teams battling against each other. At times the concentration in the rooms was amazing. Our thanks go to all those who made it such a success in particular the Wilson family who set the questions, marked the answers and ran the bar along with our daughter Jodie.

Carols by Candlelight 2011

It might seem rather early to let you know about this year's Carols by Candlelight but we know that diaries fill up quickly in December! It will be held on Sunday 4th December and will be raising funds for the completion of the 3 classroom block that is being built in Chiziro. Already the Feeding Station is up and running on the site and it provides a hot meal for 200 children a day. The Feeding Jar Project that we launched last year has been very successful with several Cardiff and Pontypridd based schools coming on board. The children in Zambia are so grateful for all the support they receive from the pupils in Wales.

Quiz night and Supper

We are looking forward to our next fundraising event which will be a quiz night and ploughman's supper on Saturday 17th September. I am sure it will be a lot of fun and pretty taxing as Rob and Ceri Wilson are setting the questions!
It is not too late to book your team in for the night. Hopefully we will be able to post new photos on here very soon.
The money raised will be used to repair the borehole at The Good Samaritan School. It will also pay for a consignment of books ( donated by local schools) and 200 scholar pack that will be given to the pupils at the Ethembeni School in Chiziro which we are building from scratch.

It is time to get your walking boots out again and join us for a 15 mile yomp on Saturday 4th June. This year we will start at Caswell Bay and end with a Ploughman's Supper at our cottage in Slade. Kings Monkton School join the project

I am pleased to tell you that Kings Monkton School have now decided to join the Feeding Jar Project. So far the senior school and the sixth form have had an assembly about it and next week the primary school children will also get to see the photos of how it is progressing in Chiziro.

New Year Choral Soiree

On January 17th a musical soiree was held at the home of Gwyneth and Hywel Jeffries.The event was organised by Maggie Beecher and was a resounding success.Maggie and Tina did an excellent job of selling raffle tickets which added greatly to the amount raised overall. These funds will be sent across to Zambia next week to be used for the next stage in the building the new school in Chiziro.

New classroom at New Hope School,Ndola

Christopher has sent us more photos of the new classroom in Ndola. They will now be enrolling 100 new pupils into grade 1. The total number of pupils attending the school has now reached 223.Amazing to think that before Teacher Aid became involved there were only 40 pupils!

Last night we held our fourth Carols night which was a resounding success.This year we had the talented chamber choir from Radyr Comprehensive leading the singing and Kate Morgan as our pianist. The audience participation was incredible with the singing really raising the roof. Thanks to everyone who helped make this such a successful evening.

Gareth and I have just finished hours of counting money! Thanks to pupils at Eglwys Wen School we have the first £400 to go towards our feeding jar project. This will feed children at the new school in Chiziro. It is an amazing amount which will go a long way to providing one hot meal a day for the children like these.

Great news. Donations are now starting to come in via Alan Powell who is the driving force in Zambia for the latest project to build the new school in Chiziro. Two donors have given £2000 between them which is amazing and people are starting to sign up for the support fund which will pay the salaries of a teacher at the school. A pre school shelter has already been completed and the school roll has swelled to 75. This shelter will eventually become the feeding centre and another two classrooms will be built by September of 2011.

We are awaiting photos of the building work that has already started at our new school in Chiziro,Chipata. We are building a village school with a multi-functional hall. This hall will be used outside school hours to provide a youth centre and adult literacy classes for the local community. It will also be used as a basic medical station which will be regularly visited by a nurse. Thanks to everyone involved in the fund raising for this amazing new project.

Last night Maggie our chairperson held a very successful hog roast and supper which was attended by 70 people. Everyone had a great time. The food was delicious and the quiz run by Tina was enjoyed by all. This was the first event to raise funds to build a school from scratch in the Chipata area of Zambia. We are now hoping to start a school from scratch in Chiziro. This will mean lots more fundraising and applying for grants. The children in this village have to walk 5 miles over rough terrain to get to the nearest school.The roads are impassible during the rainy season. This is a big project but hopefully hundreds of children will gain from the new school.

Well, after all the planning by Gareth this turned out to be a fantastic day for all concerned. The weather was kind to us and all 41 of us enjoyed a beautiful walk along the South Gower coast. We stood out a mile in our bright yellow tee shirts and despite many sets of weary legs at the end of the day everyone had a big smile on their faces. We hope to have raised pleanty of money to finish off the classroom and furnish it for the pupils at the Good Samaritan School.

What an exciting day! This is the first live webcam link we have managed to make with Rev Alick in Lusaka. He and his wife were at the school and Gareth and I were thrilled to see their smiling faces. It is so incredible to be able to chat with people across the world in this way. We told him that we would be sending him money to start building another classroom at the end of the week.This will be for the youngest pupils in the school who are being taught in a small office at the moment. We hope to be able to finish paying for the classroom with money that is raised by the sponsored walk which will take place on May 1st.

South Gower Yomp

On May 1st we will be holding a sponsored walk to help with our fundraising. The walk will be about 15 miles long and will take in some of the most beautiful beaches on the South Gower coast. We will end up in Rhossili for a meal in the pub. We have 38 walkers so far but if you would like to join us we would be thrilled as the more the merrier.

We have received an email from The New Hope School in Ndola telling us that the building work is now completed and 120 pupils have enrolled! It is amazing to think that all these children will now have an education. Some of the new pupils are 13,14 and 15 year olds who have never been to school. Hopefully we should have some new photos of the school next week so I will put them on here for everyone to see.

As the computers we sent over to Lusaka were fairly old it has been difficult to start up a webcam link with the school. We have given Rev Alick money to buy a new computer and a webcam. Hopefully this will help us to join Wales and Zambia just that little bit closer together. Watch this space for details as this new project develops in the near future.

What a great night we had again at our third annual Carols By Candlelight. It was fantastic to see over 100 smiling faces especially when we were singing 12 Days of Christmas with the actions!
Thanks to everyone for your continued support. We managed to enrol a few new members to our 100 club which pays the salary of 2 teachers now.
Hopefully we will hold another funfilled event in the Summer of 2010. More details to follow in the new year.

Funding for 2nd Teacher

Today we emailed Rev.Alick to tell him that for the next year we will be not only paying the salary for one teacher but will also fund a second one. Hopefully this will help them out greatly as one of their other sponsors had to pull out due to the recession. The reason we can do this is that the membership for the 100 club has grown.The only way that we will be able to do this for more than a year is if we ar able to persuade more people to join us. At £2.00 a month it is a fantastic way of ensuring that many orphans and vulnerable children receive the education they deserve.

What a great evening we had last night. Although not as many turned up as expected it was still a fantastic success.People thoroughly enjoyed themselves, reciting and listening to a wide range of poetry. We had great fun with the limerick competition which was won by Stella and Sue who had travelled over from Bath. Thanks to everyone who made generous donations.This money will be going straight to Ndola to complete the classroom at the New Hope School.
Our next event is the Carols by Candlelight evening on December 6th. We hope to see plenaty of peole there for what we know will be a lovely event.

We are very excited about our forthcoming event which takes place on Saturday.We thought this would attract about 40-50 people but we now have 120 coming so it should be fun. We have just received some photos from Christopher in The New Hope School in Ndola. The classroom is now at roof level and next week we will be sending more money to complete the building. They want to get the roof on before the rains start. We are very pleased that the classroom has been erected in such a short time and look forward to more photos very soon.

Teacher Aid have decided to branch out and help another school in Zambia. Today we have agreed to fund the building of a new classroom for the New Hope School in Ndola.At present they only have 2 classrooms and they are able to educate 40 children.They also have a feeding centre that feeds 150 children. Hopefully by providing another classroom more pupils will be able to access lessons. We are very grateful to Rev.Alick Malama for providing us with the contact to this school.
We will be applying to The Kitchen Table Trust for a grant to build a further classroom as they kindly helped us build the community hall at The Good Samaritan School. Will let you all know if the application is successful.

Thanks to Val ( in the pink) an old school friend who was our bingo caller for the night.This proved to be a great money spinner and added greatly to the overall takings on the night. You can also see Bev ( pink sunburnt arm!) who never fails to support our events. Her daughter Holly hopes to go over to the school in 2010 to help out for a few weeks. Great news from Simon Lowe again. He has received another £100 after a talk he gave to a local rotary club. We will now be asking Rev Alick Malama to choose some more sports equipment for the school. It is great to think how all this is enriching the lives of the children.

For the last two years we have held a Carols by Candlelight evening to raise funds. We have been lucky enough to have members of the Cardiff Polyphonic Choir to lead the singing. We held a very successful Hog Roast in June 2007 to raise funds for Teacher Aid. People that joined in this event were treated to a scrumptious feast.The weather was very kind to us that night. Feeding the children

When we went to visit the school we were told that their cooking pot was broken so they had been unable to feed the children as they used to do.This photo shows Selly buying a new pot and 100 plastic bowls with money from our 25th wedding anniversary.We had asked for people to give us money rather than presents and it enabled us to purchase a great deal of items for the school. Many of the children rely on school to provide them with one meal a day as their families are unable to afford food for them.

This photo shows the pupils outisde for assembly.You can see the unfinished classroom in the background. We have now been able to complete this classroom with the money raised from several different functions over the last few years.You can also see the container which was sent over from UK full to the brim with equipment gathered from Cardiff schools. Now that the community hall has been completed the pupils have assembly indoors during the Winter months.

100 Club

We are delighted that our old school friend Simon Lowe has arranged a shipment of sports equipment via Tools With A Mission in Ipswich. Two large boxes will be making their way to Lusaka and should arrive in August. They contain:
2 x 15 sets of football socks, 9 footballs,1 volleyball,1 basketball, 4 tubes of tennis balls,3 chess sets, 2 ball pumps, football kit, boots and trainers. We just cannot imagine how excited the pupils will be to receive all of this. Rev.Alick Malama will ensure that not only do they go to the Good Samaritan School but also the other schools that he is linked with in Zambia.

Computers

A few months ago we sent a dozen computers which were no longer of use to a school in Bridgend over to the school. Alan Holland celebrated his 50th birthday and asked for donations to Teacher Aid rather than presents.He raised over £2,000 and this money was used to create a computer room for the pupils which will also be used by members of the local community. We have also paid for the school to have internet access and we are looking forward to them going online and having webcam contact with pupils in the UK.We already have many school interested in forming links with the school and we are sure the whole project will be a huge success.If you want to get involved with this project us then send an email and we will see what we can do.

Football Goals

Alex Vaughan ran a half marathon and arranged a fun run at his school in Knowsley.The proceeds went towards buying sports equipment, in particular goal posts, for the school.The boys must have been thrilled!

Community Hall

We managed to obtain a grant from The Kitchen Table Trust to build a community hall on the school site. We are very grateful for their £5,000 contribution towards the building costs. One of the 100 club members Stella Turner celebrated her 50th birthday and asked for donations to the school instead of presents and her money went towards buying furniture for the hall. Many thanks Stella!

We were thrilled that pupils in Radyr Comprehensive raised money to buy school shoes for some of the pupils at the school.They needed these so that they could go to high school and they could not afford to buy them. Thanks must go to Mrs Ceri Wilson for arranging these fundraising activities.
Also we must thank pupils at Llanishen High school for providing funds to buy a digital camera for the school.This means that we can keep the photos coming.

Chicken Business

Teacher Aid provided a chicken run and recently Rev Alick bought 500 chicks to start the chicken business. We hope that this will help the school to raise money in the future. We are very grateful to Rob Thomas who raised money by selling eggs from his own chickens to pay towards this venture.

This is our shopping trip to buy football kit for the boys and netball kit for the girls. They were so thrilled to receive these gifts! The whole school went out to watch the teams playing in their new clothes. Very soon a shipment of sports kit will be sent from Bedfordshire and it will arrive at the end of the Summer.Dr Simon Lowe has kindly arranged this for Teacher Aid.

This is the library at the school.All the books you see were from Llanishen High School and Llysfaen Primary School. Selly said that this is one of the best school libraries in Lusaka.She is so proud of it and the children love to use it.

Water Pump

This is the water pump in the school grounds.It was paid for by Teacher Aid and now provides clean water not just for the pupils but also all the people living in the local community.

This is what the classrooms look like now.The children now sit at desks which were sent to Lusaka from Cardiff.They were taken from a school that was closing down and travelled all the way in a container which is now used at the school for storage.

Over the next few weeks I hope to post lots of information and photos about this school in Zambia and hope that you will enjoy reading all about it. The charity Teacher Aid was started by Maggie Beecher in Cardiff after she visited the school whilst on holiday and realised that it needed a lot of help. There are now four trustees and we work hard to raise funds to improve the facilities at the school which educates 450 pupils.
